Brought a new EV and it is taking for ever to charge?

If you have purchased a new EV car and tried to charge it from the supplied 10A IC-CPD (In-Cord Control & Protection Device)  you will have noticed that it takes a very long time for a full charge using this method. This is known as Mode 2 EV Charging. With this method of charging the charging  current is limited to a maximum of 16 Amps (3.7KW)

Typical Charging times for Mode 2  IC-CPD type power supplies  as stated in Standards NZ  Table 1 (Pg 24) of snz-pas-60112021
The IC-CPD power supplies  from different car manufacturers can range from
  •   1.5KW (6Amp) which would provide approx.   9.0Km p/Hour of Charge and could take approx. 50 Hours  for full charge
  •   1.8 KW (8Amp) which would provide approx. 11.0Km p/Hour of Charge  and could take approx. 42 Hours for full charge
  •   3.7KW (16Amp) which would provide approx. 22.0Km p/Hour of Charge and could take approx. 20Hours for full charge

As you can see  the above  method of charging is very slow and may not be suitable for everyone's needs. You may require a solution  to charge your EV faster so your car is ready to go again for the following day.

With a Mode 3 Charger there are a range of options and sizes available and this can up your charging rate for   Single Phase units up to 7.4 KW and Three phase units up to 22KW massively reducing the charge time required.

Typical Charging times for Mode 3 Wall Box type power supplies  as stated in Standards NZ Table 1 (Pg 24) of snz-pas-60112021
  • Single Phase 230V 7.4KW (32Amp) which would provide approx.44Km p/Hour of charge and could take approx. 10 Hours for a full Charge.
  • Three Phase 400V 22.0KW  which would provide approx. 131km p/Hour of charge and could take approx.  3.5 hours for a full charge.

We can supply & Install  all main brand EVSE  Wall Connectors (Electric Vehicle Supply equipment) in the Te Awamutu and surrounding areas to dramatically speed up your charging speed of your new EV.

We will need to do a site assessment to see what power supply you currently have,  what your current loading in your house is to see how much capacity we have left for charging, where your switchboard is and the best location and method of wiring the new dedicated charger circuit in your home. Once we have done this assessment we can then provide you with best options and pricing on your EVSE solutions.
